Our World Belongs to God

Prior to Hurricane Harvey, communities were engaging in clashing confrontations. White Supremacists and Neo Nazi enthusiasts were marching and meeting up against Anti-Racist signs and placards. There were clashes in places like Boston, Vancouver, Quebec City, and London Ontario. Then came hurricane Harvey, surpassing our imagination in rainfall alone. Which region in North American has developed storm sewers prepared for 50 inches of rainfall in less than a week? Storms and high winds over the Gulf of Mexico drove in waters and winds in biblical proportions, causing hundreds and thousands of homes to flood, washing businesses up, drenching hospitals and schools, and shutting down places of employment. So much of this water would have been answered prayer for residences living in the interior of British Columbia, where all summer long people have been battling blazes and fighting forest fires, because conditions were so dry. Entire reservations were removed and whole towns and cities evacuated. Recently we have desert landscapes with thin-shadowed camels walking through the dust from Eastern Africa. Natural disasters serve as further evidence of the larger effects of global warming. Natural disasters also seem to have given us a break from toxic political tensions between nations possessing nuclear warheads. Instead of beautiful summer sea side resorts along the Mediterranean, we have seen boat after dingy after raft filled with red life jackets flirting with death. We’ve had living room seats to the collapse of a nation in the midst of civil war, with four storied neighborhoods bombed to disfiguration and children washing up on shores. Through all of these tragedies Jesus says “Do not be alarmed.” “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.” Matthew 24:6-8. Do not be alarmed, the end is yet to come. Along with contractions and birth pains comes new life, a new heaven and a new earth. It is in times like that this, that faith lifts us up, reminding us that Our World still Belongs to God!
