MOUNTAINVIEW CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH
February 2018 Highlights
Full Council ~ met on February 8th and would like to share the following.…
1. Tony Kamphuis, Chair of the Long-Range Planning Committee came to the meeting and provided Council with an update on the Committee’s work. Following the presentation and a time for questions, Council affirmed the work completed by the Committee to date and the plans for next steps. The work continues to be focused on helping to ensure that the ministries of the church are able to flourish through the most effective use of the resources entrusted.
2. Mountainview staff provided updates to Council in person or in writing on their achievement of ministry goals jointly developed for the 2017 / 2018 church calendar. This is an effective way for Council to remain informed and supportive of the many areas of ministry being led by staff on a day to day basis. A time of prayer for the various ministries followed this time of reporting.
3. The nomination process for elders and deacons to replace retiring office bearers was reviewed. A final list was approved and those nominated will be contacted by their neighbourhood elder or deacon. An information session is planned for February 27th. On March 25th the list of nominees will be presented to the congregation. On April 15th the congregation will be asked to affirm the list of nominees and on May 6th new officer bearers will be selected by lot. This part of the agenda concluded with a prayer of blessing for the nomination process.
Classis Niagara Meeting
Pastor Sid and Brian Verheul attended the Classis meeting held at Bethany CRC in Fenwick on February 21st. The theme for this Classis meeting was “Prayerful Dependence on God” and a series of devotional pieces were ably led throughout the day by retired Pastor John Heidinga. We started with a prayer module on “Growing in Personal Devotions,” then moved to “Growing in Prayer Ministry with others,” to “Growing in Prayer for our Churches,” and finally, “Growing a Heart for the Lost.” Each council walked through questions that had them reflect on aspects of prayer in their congregation and ministries. Dr. Andre Basson is retiring, and a classis wide celebration is being planned for him in Jubilee Fellowship on Saturday March 24th, 2018from 1-4 on. Under Covenant Relationships, delegates were elected to go to Synod. We also had an excellent presentation from the interim President of Redeemer College, Mr. Fred Verwoerd. Under leadership development Ms. Anna Bailey reported on her work with the youth of Classis Niagara, with 11 young people attending a leadership development retreat in Muskoka, four of them coming from Mountainview. Each church will receive a copy of “Growing Younger,” and Janice will be receiving ours. The Leadership Development team is making plans to map out the October 2018 meeting of Classis. Because the day’s theme in Classis was “Prayerful Dependence on God,” this classis meeting had a retreat like feel to it, and most everyone walked away blessed.
Pastoral Ministry Team:
The PMT met on February 1st and would like to share the following.…
With much thought and prayer, a list of potential nominees was prepared for the upcoming nomination process. The list was prepared in time to be presented to Full Council for affirmation on February 8. Our prayer is that those nominated will receive the nominations with open hearts.
Later in the meeting the Pastoral Elders spent some time in-discussion, reflecting on Mountainview and the life of the church. The Congregation is asked to continually pray for one another, as well as for Pastor Sid and Pastor Fred as they lead Mountainview.
Ministry Leadership Team
The MLT met on February 21st. Minutes were received from each of the ministries. We would like to share the following:
The Education Ministry Team and staff are working on opportunities to inform the congregation on a series of topics beginning with same sex attraction. Plans are currently being made to deliver this education through a message and accompanying opportunities for discussion and dialogue on the following dates looking at the possible date of April 8th. More information will follow as the date approaches.
Kids@Mountainview is going well under Christine’s leadership. During the last three months the children have been focused on Gratitude, Generosity and Commitment, while receiving new bible stories each week. Christine Winter and Alice Posthumus are scheduled to attend the Orange Conference in Atlanta Georgia April 24 through 28th.
The Worship Ministry Team has decorated the church with dormant branches, thorns and stones. They stand as reminders of Christ’s crown of thorns and a hint of hope towards Easter. The stones are a symbol of austerity and rigor, desolation and misery, severity and sadness. The devil used stones to tempted Jesus, “if you are the Son of God, command these stones become loaves of bread.” (Matt.4:3), but Jesus made them a symbol for overcoming temptation when he replied, “One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Mt 4:4; Dt 8:3). Plans for a 7:00 p.m. Good Friday Tenebrae service are well underway, and Easter Sunday on April 1st. During the months of May and June, Pastor Sid is planning a series of sermons on “Five Steps in Sharing the Gospel.” Based on the book BELLS, which you are welcome to read at www.The-5-Habits-of-Highly-Missional-People.pdf
Youth Ministry: Janice Schwanz continues to give leadership to her youth leaders and young people. They hosted a delicious fund-raising dinner on February 18th, where they were able to raise over $6,000.00 for the “AOYC” (All Ontario Youth Convention) and a future missions project possibly with World Renew DRS to Puerto Rico in 2019 March Break.
The deacons are taking an offering for the World Renew Canadian Food Grains Bank on March 4th and hosting Doorways to the Community in the AM Service on March 18th.
Outreach are talking about another Serve Saturday, possibly for April 28th. They are looking ahead to the Carnival being planned for June 16th, and Kids Camp starting for six straight weeks on July 2nd. They have recommended we hold outdoor afternoon worship services at 5:00 p.m. followed by a B.B.Q. for the children and their families, following the same six weeks. Plans continue to unfold. They have also raised the possibility of another HANDS team trip with EduDeo planned for January 2019. A seven-week session of ALPHA plans to begin on March 22nd, with Jane Devisser and Diane Smit giving leadership.
As you can see, it has been another productive month of ministry in and through Mountainview. Please continue to pray for Council, Ministry Leaders and all of our staff providing leadership in so many areas of ministry which are so vital to the life of the church.
