Study Tour in Egypt, Jordan and Israel

Sue and I, along with thirty other pastor’s and wives from Classes Niagara and Toronto, have received an invitation for an all expenses paid Study Tour in Egypt, Jordan and Israel. A couple in British Columbia wondered how they might bless and strengthen Christian Reformed Churches all across Canada, and since 2012, have been sending lead pastors from B.C., Alberta, the Mid-West, and Western Ontario. Next year, they will have completed their objective by sending Pastors and wives from churches in Classis Quinte and Eastern Canada. This tour is indirectly designed to bless local congregations. We leave tomorrow, April 9th, from Toronto Airport at 12:45, fly to Egypt, and arrive in Cairo at 5:05 am on the 10th. We’ll tour the pyramids, then board a plane at 4:40 pm and arrive in Luxor at 5:50 pm the same day. We get one day, April 11th, to explore the temples and tombs around Luxor, all of which have impacted the stories of Genesis. Early Thursday morning, the 12th, we fly from Luxor to Aswan, Egypt, along the Nile River. We’ll see St. Catherine Monastery and that evening, climb up Mount Sinai and sleep on top. Under the stars. Overnight. And we’re told it’s going to be cold. Bedouins are taking up some thin mats for us to sleep on and will have coffee ready for us in the morning, to help us catch the sun rise. On that Friday we’ll travel to Taba Egypt, a border town with the city of Eilat, Israel. Saturday We’ll cross the boarder into Israel and drive up to the Dead Sea. Sunday we’ll be exploring the ruins of Masada. Monday, April 16th we are scheduled to explore the desert region of Qumran, where the Dead Sea scrolls were discovered, and later that afternoon, drive into Bethlehem. Tuesday we’ll walk around Bethlehem and explore Shephelah and Herodian. On Wednesday, April 18th, we’ll explore Jerusalem, and on Thursday explore around the Sea of Galilee. Friday we’ll go into the Decapolis, on the eastern side of the Sea of Galilee. On Saturday, we’ll cross the boarder of Israel into Jordan, explore the region and stay over night, with a farewell dinner scheduled for Sunday evening in Petra. We then board a bus for Aqaba, King Hussein airport, and fly out from Aqaba to Cairo, at 10:30 pm. From there we pick up a flight to Toronto at 1:45 am and arrive back in Toronto at 7:25 am on April 23rd. I’m already exhausted just thinking about all the flights, bus rides, hikes, walks and climbs, and different beds every night. But walking in the stories of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, and the gospels will be life giving. They assigned a book by Bruce Feiler called Walking the Journey as preparation, as well as James Mitchener’s The Source and in some ways, I feel like I’ve already begun the tour. We covet your prayers and hope and trust that indeed we will all be blessed by this generous gift.     Pastor Sid
