Passage in focus: Matthew 5:1-16

Questions

1.     Who are the crowds in verse 1?  (see end of chapter 4)

2.    How would the disciples have felt about each of these groups?

3.    Who did Jesus teach?

4.    What do you think the purpose of the beatitudes is?  What is Jesus saying?

5.    Where else is there a list of basic teachings given that are then expanded?

6.    Are any lines in the list repeated?  Why might that be?

7.     Count the beatitudes.  How many are there?

8.     Is there an order or structure to the list?

9.     What is poor in spirit?  Is that a good thing?

10.    How many of these “blessed” things do you want to have?

11.    What changes from verse 10 to verse 11?
