What's Going On? Deep Hope Conversation

As promised at the beginning of this sermon series on Deep Hope, there will be a congregational conversation taking place.  It will be on Tuesday November 17 at 7 pm in the council room.

The idea is that we gather to talk about the themes or topics that have come up in the sermon series.  As we do so we can wonder if there is something else we sense we need to think about or focus on.  You will have a chance to comment on each topic. Then there will be a chance to wonder about “what else do we need to have deep hope about?”

The board has decided that this conversation would be best accomplished in a more formal style.  Greg VanGeest as chair of the board will guide us through the meeting and keep us on schedule as needed.  We will go through each of the preaching topics.

1.   Power – we are called to depend on God’s Spirit and not on our strength, wisdom, power wealth, organization etc.  Are we too focused on human power?

2.   Living as the Church – we are called to be the church in action wherever we are.  Are we too focused on going to events at the building over living out our faith everywhere we go?

3.   The Deep Abyss – do we believe that God is present in the deep chaotic darkness of life as well as everywhere bright and good?

4.   Living Faith – we are called to do the things we believe, not just know them.  Are we too focused on knowing with our heads at the expense of seeking to live it out?

5.   Deep Thanks – we are called to struggle with thankfulness in tough spots.  Are we either only thankful for the positive or too fast to be thankful for challenges without fully feeling them?

6.   Unity – we are called to be one with all God’s people.  Are we too used to denominations and splits to be bothered by them and are we willing to work to connect with other Christians?

7.   Gospel – we are called to celebrate the amazing gift of life in Christ.  Are we in danger of working so hard at church that we forget it is first of all a celebration?

You are, of course, welcome to re-listen to sermons or go over the message slides and passages.  However, you are also welcome to simply come with what struck you and stuck with you from each message.

After going through what has been preached, we will have the opportunity to discuss what else might be a deep hope for Mountainview.  That will be the final agenda item.

8.   ?????? – what else do we need to think about and perhaps reframe as we move forward as followers of Jesus?  What might the Spirit be calling us to consider?

I look forward to having a meaningful conversation with the congregation as we wonder together about God’s plan for our community.
